Yardley, PA, October 10, 2016 — Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) presented the 45th Annual International Conference, “Back to the Future,” September 29 to October 1, 2016 in Columbus, Ohio.  Over 500 top risk management, insurance, and actuarial science students and advisors from GIS chapters at 57 colleges and universities across North America convened at the Columbus Convention Center for three days of intensive exposure to the insurance sector and programming related to the many career paths available.

250 industry professionals gathered to present a 62-exhibitor career fair and participate in educational sessions, leadership seminars, and networking events. More than 400 interviews for internships and entry-level positions were conducted on-site during the conference, with multiple offers reported from participating companies and organizations. The conference theme of diversity, inclusion, and authenticity was carried out consistently through programming, keynote speeches, participation in the Inclusion@Lloyd’s initiative Global Dive In Festival as one of only three US locations, and the launch of GammaSAID, Gamma Solutions for Authenticity, Inclusion, and Diversity – a pioneering collaborative initiative to foster meaningful dialogue and action throughout the industry.

The 2016 conference was made possible through the generous support of sponsoring companies and organizations, as well as by the GIS Sustaining Partners, all of whom are committed to developing the next generation of industry talent. Participants benefitted from more than 60 industry- and student-led educational sessions; three industry-leading roundtables, including a first-ever Recruiters Roundtable to promote understanding between the industry and students preparing to enter it, a Professional Association Roundtable to foster collaboration across the industry, and a two-part Faculty Roundtable for the cross-pollination of ideas and shared best practices; and five keynotes. The keynote speakers were: Christopher Paterakis, Chief Human Resource Leader with Westfield Insurance (presented by Westfield Insurance); Mike Miller, Treasurer of the Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation; Mark Berven, President and COO with Nationwide Property & Casualty Operations; Nicole Michaels, Operational Excellence and Performance Improvement and Insurance Leader with Ernst & Young; and Patrick Kinney, Executive Vice President – Field Management with Travelers (presented by Travelers).

The 2015-16 individual and chapter award winners were announced during the Friday Night Annual Awards Dinner, sponsored by Travelers. During Saturday’s closing reception, sponsored by Liberty Mutual, Celeste Azubuike and Sarah Rumon were elected the 2016-17 International Student Representatives. The conference also featured a donation drive to benefit Dress for Success Columbus, stemming from the partnership between GIS and the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF) for the Annual Week of Giving.

GIS leads the insurance industry in developing and sustaining a talent pipeline as evidenced by its explosive membership and chapter growth over the past four years, and the annual conference is the largest and most significant opportunity for companies to connect with and recruit these insurance and risk management students. Sponsorship of the conference is Gamma Iota Sigma’s primary source of funding to support programming delivered throughout academic year.

The next Conference will be held September 28-30, 2017 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas.
