Yardley, PA, October 10, 2016 — Gamma Iota Sigma’s (GIS) 45th Annual International Conference, held September 29 to October 1, 2016 in Columbus, Ohio, was one of only three US locations chosen to participate in the global Dive in Festival, spearheaded by Inclusion@Lloyd’s. Dive In is an industry-wide initiative highlighting the business case for workplaces to understand and promote diversity and inclusion (D&I), and providing practical ideas and inspiration for how to bring about positive change. Events took place in 16 cities in 10 countries across 4 continents, making the annual Festival the only international, sector-wide, concurrent D&I event of its kind anywhere in the world.
GIS was proud to join the widespread collaboration, having just launched GammaSAID (Solutions for Authenticity, Inclusion, and Diversity), a pioneering initiative to foster meaningful dialogue and action throughout the industry. GIS appointed a student- and alumni-led GammaSAID Council, whose efforts culminated in interactive opportunities at the conference to engage the student body and partner organizations in this business-critical conversation. Thursday’s programming focused on the theme #GammaIs AUTHENTIC, featuring six Dive In sessions presented by the GammaSAID Council and local partners from Allstate, the International Association of Black Actuaries, and the Business Insurance D&I Institute.
The Friday morning Opening Session kicked off with GIS Trustee and Lloyd’s Northeast Regional Director Glenn Dorr introducing a video featuring Lloyd’s CEO Inga Beale that focused on the company’s innovative efforts to attract, engage, and empower a diverse workforce, as well as the rationale and benefits of doing so. To follow, GIS Executive Director Noelle Codispoti presented a video launching GammaSAID. On the final day of the conference, the GammaSAID Council led three sessions focusing on critical and provocative topics, including an Authenticity Lab. The Council will continue to develop programming and resources.
Because of its focus on honing the next generation of insurance professionals, GIS is uniquely positioned to contribute to and help shape industry hot topics such as diversity and inclusion, and has asserted its position at the forefront of the talent gap conversation and the insurance careers movement. GIS is able to present unique perspectives reflecting the interests and needs of its 4,000+ student members, who consistently report the importance of company culture as they enter the job search and recruiting process. GIS leads the insurance industry in developing and sustaining a talent pipeline, and the Annual Conference is the largest and most significant opportunity for companies to connect with and recruit these insurance and risk management students.
