I always knew I wanted to do something math-related, and Actuarial Science seemed like the perfect fit for me. Not only is it great for people who love numbers, the insurance industry is the hidden treasure of the working world.

GIS has given me a huge insight into the industry I wish to enter. All of my internships, my actuarial exam success, and my confidence in the career path I've chosen can all be attributed to GIS.

It is much more than an organization where students just share a common interest. It is an entrance into the real world designed to help students carve out their paths into the career they want. With the help of GIS, I can be confident in my future because of the opportunities it provides.

I became interested in Gamma Iota Sigma at my university soon after deciding to change my major to Risk Management & Insurance. Our associate director of the Brantley Center at Appalachian, Greg Langdon, informed me about the organization and the opportunities that it provided for our students, such as scholarship and travel opportunities. As a first generation college student, I place a lot of value on any kind of support and learning opportunities available to our students.

Gamma Iota Sigma has provided me with a kind of exposure to the insurance industry and its professionals that I could never imagined of coming into college. For example, last semester I had the privilege to travel with the group to Charleston, South Carolina, for the South East RIMS Conference where we got to meet and interact with professionals in the industry representing over a dozen companies. We are also fortunate to have industry professionals often come to our meetings and share with us their experiences and answer questions we may have for them. All of these opportunities have been possible through my participation in the organization, and continue to help me reach a better level of understanding and appreciation for the insurance industry. It's also a great way to further connect the knowledge I acquire in the classroom to the outside world.

With a degree in Actuarial Science, I would love to work for an insurance or pensions company with a rotation program. I look up to high position CEOs and COOs in big companies and would like to be someone who inspires others in the future.

It's the core values of our chapter that caught my attention when I was first introduced to it. They are brotherhood, knowledge, professionalism, leadership and community involvement. As an international student, I cherished all the opportunity that can enhance my personal growth into an all rounded individual and I would also like to know more people who are pursuing the same career path with me. I wanted to be in a college fraternity which would brings out me out of my comfort zone.

Through participating in Gamma Iota Sigma, it provides me plenty of opportunity to build my relationships with industry professionals, learn more about the industry and further my professional development. Also, through serving in the Executive Council, I gained leadership skills and improved my teamwork. The knowledge and skills that I learned in GIS will hold value long into my career.

Be ready to step out of your comfort zone and explore your passion and interest! Gamma Iota Sigma is the place where you could grow into an all rounded individual while you are in school. Do what you want, don't let anyone or anything stand in your way.

Becoming a leader in Gamma has been instrumental to my development as a young business professional. I have been able to attend the past two annual conferences, and positioned myself for success as a result of each of those conferences. Through the 2013 conference in Charlotte, NC I began the networking that led to my NAPSLO internship the following summer. And through the 2014 conference in Dallas, TX I had my first interview with the company I am now working for beginning in 2015!
